Illustration for UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency | Ilustración para ACNUR, la Agencia Internacional de la ONU para los refugiados.
The UNHCR invited me to collaborate with an illustration on the refugee problem. I am very grateful for the invitation and be able to express my thoughts about it. Here are some words about the process of illustration and what motivated me to do it:After much research and investigation, what captivated me most was a beautiful photograph of a mother with her son, both refugees. While I was painting that scene, I had the feeling that it reminded me of something else, something about a deeper love, something sacred in this bond between mother and son. The idea of protection and refuge were circling around the protagonists, so I materialized it in the house-like structure that contains them and protects them from the outside. When I finished seeing the image I understood that it referred to the sacred images of Mary with her son Jesus in her arms, and thus the golden appeared as a halo. And immediately came the very clear words and very linked to my values, which are of Judaism: "all life is sacred." I decided that the image along with the text would result in a clear and powerful message, while speaking of universal values, which we all share. Or it is my desire that it be so.
